Using Duolapse

How do I change Screen Recording or Camera access?

Duolapse asks for both permissions during the welcome tour. To change them later, open Duolapse › Settings › Permissions, which takes you to the matching page in System Settings. After you turn on Screen Recording, macOS may ask you to quit and reopen Duolapse.

Why did recording pause by itself?

Duolapse pauses after a minute without keyboard, mouse or trackpad input (Smart Pause, which you can turn off in Settings › Recording) and resumes on your next input. It also pauses when free disk space drops below 2 GB, or when the screen cannot be captured for 30 seconds, and shows the reason on the time-lapse. While the display is asleep or the screen is locked, screen frames are skipped and recording continues once you are back.

What happens after a crash or power loss?

Frames are saved as you record, so the time-lapse is kept. The next time you open Duolapse, it appears as paused and Duolapse offers to resume it.

Where are my time-lapses stored?

Time-lapses are stored in Duolapse's own folder on your Mac, and the library shows how much space each one uses. Finished pieces can be moved to the Archive, out of the sidebar. Move to Trash removes a time-lapse from the library, and the space is freed once you empty the Trash.

Exports are saved to Movies › Duolapse Recordings unless you choose another folder in Settings › Export.

How do I export a time-lapse?

Press ⌘E to open the export window, which previews the video as you change the layout, length and overlays. Lengths longer than the recording are not available, so the menu offers the longest possible one instead.

Quick Export (⌥⌘E) exports with your saved options without opening the window. You can also drag a time-lapse from the sidebar into any Finder folder.

Which keyboard shortcuts are there?

⌃⌥⌘R pauses or resumes your latest time-lapse from any app. The full list is on the keyboard shortcuts page, also available in Duolapse under Help › Keyboard Shortcuts.

About Duolapse

How much does Duolapse cost?

Duolapse is free.

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 Tahoe or later. Intel Macs are not supported.

Is Duolapse available for Windows or Linux?

Not for now. Duolapse is a native Mac app written entirely in Swift, so a version for Windows or Linux would mean rewriting it from scratch.

Does it record sound?

No. Time-lapses are video only, and Duolapse never uses the microphone.

Can I record a paper sketchbook or an iPad?

Yes. Point your desk camera at it and turn the screen source off in the source picker, so only the camera is recorded.

Can I record more than one display?

Each time-lapse records one display, which you choose in the source picker. You can switch to another display at any time.

How much disk space does it use?

About 100 MB per hour of recording with screen and camera, measured on an M1 Pro. Idle time is skipped, and Duolapse pauses if free space drops below 2 GB.

Can I export the same time-lapse again?

Yes, as often as you like, in any layout and length. Frames are kept until you move the time-lapse to the Trash and empty it.

Does Duolapse need an internet connection?

No. Duolapse has no network access, no account and no analytics, so your recordings never leave your Mac.

Is Duolapse available in other languages?

Not yet. The app is in English for now.
